The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
